The CCNA qualification is the usual starting point for all training in Cisco. With it, you'll learn how to work on maintaining and installing switches and routers. The internet is made up of many routers, and big organisations who have different locations need them to allow their networks of computers to communicate.

To take this course, you should be clear on computer networks and how they operate and function, because networks are linked to routers. Without this you may encounter problems. We'd recommend you find training that also includes the basics (CompTIA Network+ as an example - maybe with the A+ as well) prior to starting your CCNA. Some companies will design a bespoke package for you.

Achieving CCNA is the right level to aim for; don't be pushed into attempting your CCNP. After gaining experience in the working environment, you'll know if it's relevant for you to have this next level up. If you decide to become more qualified, you will have developed the skills you require to take on your CCNP - because it's a difficult qualification to master - and mustn't be entered into casually.

OK, why is it better to gain commercial certification instead of familiar academic qualifications obtained from tech' colleges and universities? Accreditation-based training (in industry terminology) is more effective in the commercial field. The IT sector has acknowledged that a specialist skill-set is what's needed to cope with a technically advancing workplace. Microsoft, CISCO, Adobe and CompTIA are the dominant players. They do this through focusing on the skill-sets required (together with a proportionate degree of associated knowledge,) rather than trawling through all the background 'extras' that computer Science Degrees often do (because the syllabus is so wide).

If an employer understands what they're looking for, then they just need to look for the exact skill-set required to meet that need. Commercial syllabuses are set to meet an exact requirement and aren't allowed to deviate (as academic syllabuses often do).

Most of us would love to think that our careers will remain safe and our future is protected, but the likely scenario for most jobs throughout England currently appears to be that security may be a thing of the past. Security can now only exist via a quickly rising marketplace, driven forward by a lack of trained workers. It's this shortage that creates the correct environment for market-security - a far better situation.
