Often, trainers provide a big box of books. Obviously, this isn't much fun and not ideal for achieving retention. Studies in learning psychology have shown that we remember much more when we receive multi-sensorial input, and we take action to use what we've learned.

Interactive full motion video featuring instructor demo's and practice lab's beat books hands-down. And you'll actually enjoy doing them. It's wise to view some of the typical study materials provided before you sign the purchase order. Always insist on instructor demonstrations, video tutorials and interactive audio-visual sections with practice modules.

Avoid training that is purely online. You want physical CD/DVD ROM course materials where possible, enabling them to be used at your convenience - and not be totally reliant on a good broadband connection all the time.

If you're just starting out in this business, it could be smart to preface your database study with some software support instruction. This will give you some lower-level accreditations, that will help you get your first foot on the ladder, as well as provide you with an insight into a further useful facet of the business. Consider the Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician ('MCDST'). Your entire career training-path of 'MCDST', 'MCTS' & MCITP could possibly be concluded in roughly around one year if you're studying part-time outside of a job. Along with any specific career-track though, we encourage you to tread very carefully prior to deciding on your options. You'll need to be sure that the teaching practices and the actual selected occupation are going to be right for you, so talk things through with a reliable I.T. training consultant first. If you don't really focus primarily on exactly where you intend to finish up, you might find that you're miles off track and 1000s of pounds worse off!

'In-Centre workshop days' get touted as a big positive benefit by many training schools. When you talk to most computer industry students who have used them, you'll begin to see a common thread - they are viewed as a waste of time due to many reasons:

- Loads of travelling - frequent trips and often over 100 miles a pop.

- Mon-Fri availability with workshops is the norm, and with 2-3 days to book off work, this causes a lot of problems for most working students.

- Let's not forget lost vacation time. Most of us have 4 weeks off each year. If at least half is sacrificed to learning, then there's very little left over for us.

- With the high costs involved, many training providers make the classes quite large - certainly not ideal (and much less personal).

- Many students want to study at a slower or quicker pace than the rest of the class. This can create a classic case of 'classroom tension'.

- The cost of travel - driving or taking public transport backwards and forwards to the training college and of course bed and breakfast for the night can start to get expensive with each visit. Assuming just 5-10 centre-days costing around 35 pounds for a single over-night room, plus a petrol cost of 40 pounds and 15 pounds for food, that equates to four to nine hundred pounds of costs that we weren't expecting.

- All of us want some privacy. We should never risk giving up any possible promotion that could awarded to us because our employer knows we're retraining.

- Don't think it's unusual for attendees to hide the fact that they want to raise a question - simply due to the reason that they're amongst other classmates.

- More often than not, days in-centre frequently become basically impossible to attend, in cases where you live away for some part of the year.

Why don't you just watch and learn with industry specialists one-on-one from pre-made classes, taking them when it's convenient for you, not someone else. Consider... With a laptop you have the ability to work in the garden, a park, or just outside. And 24 hr-a-day support is just a web-browser away at times of difficulty. There's no need to take notes - everything is prepared in advance for you. If you need to cover something again, just go for it. The final upshot: Reduced stress, money saved, and no travelling or long journeys.
