There is a tidal wave of change about to hit technology over the next few decades - and the industry becomes more ground-breaking every year. There are people who believe that the revolution in technology we've been going through is slowing down. This couldn't be more wrong. Terrific advances are ahead of us, and the internet in particular will become an increasingly dominant part of our lives.

Should lifestyle be around the top on your goal sheet, you will welcome the news that the usual remuneration for the majority of IT staff is considerably better than salaries in much of the rest of industry. The good news is there is no easing up for IT jobs expansion across Britain. The market is continuing to expand enormously, and we don't have anywhere near enough qualified skilled IT professionals to fill current job vacancies, so it's highly unlikely that this will change significantly for quite some time to come.

Programmers working on systems use languages like C. The 'C' of today is a low-level easy to use language that hardly resembles the initial version. Software engineers engaged on 'applications' use higher-level 'languages', of which there are a great deal. Each one has its own specific group of rules & commands, and some suit particular tasks over others. So database-programs are probably going to be written in an appropriate 'language' that sits well in the database-environment, but games programs have to have a low level language (such as 'C') to run fast enough. With database 'applications', split-second timing isn't a priority, but with video games 'applications' its very significant indeed! You need options which are designed to make life easier for the database-user, so a stripped down language for speed would be completely in-appropriate. It's a bit like the comparison between the family-estate car & a racing-car. The 5+ seater estate car is more comfortable & practical, but its most certainly not built for speed. For driving on long trips with the children though, these functional features are definitely more relevant.

In first place for the top potential problem for IT trainees is a requirement to attend multiple workshop days. A lot of training companies push the plus points of attending, usually though, they end up as a growing difficulty due to:

- All that travelling - lots of visits and quite often hundreds of miles each time.

- Access to classes; normally Monday to Friday and two or three days in a row. You then have the difficulty of the days away from work.

- If we get 4 weeks holiday each year, using half of that on study workshops leaves very little time for holidays.

- With the high costs involved, most companies have to put on larger classes - which isn't ideal (and with less one-on-one time).

- Some trainees lean towards a slower or quicker pace than the rest of the class. Sometimes this causes tension in the class.

- Tot up the cost of all the travelling, food, accommodation and parking and you'll be in for a big surprise. Trainees mention extra costs ranging from hundreds to over a thousand pounds. Do the maths - and understand where they're coming from.

- Maintaining the privacy of our training will be of paramount importance to most trainees. Why would you want to give up any job advancement, income boosts or achievement at work just because you're retraining. If your boss finds out that you're undertaking qualification in a different industry, what are they going to be thinking?

- Asking questions in front of other class-mates can make any one of us a little uncomfortable. Have you ever left a question un-asked as you didn't want to appear stupid?

- Working and living away - a minority of students need to live or work away for certain parts of the programme. Days in-centre are therefore very difficult then, yet you've already paid for them when you paid initially.
